Spanish bubbles – just in time for Thanksgiving

Few other styles of wine can cement good, festive, moments in life like sparkling wine – it’s food friendly, doesn’t have to cost a fortune and goes with just about any kind of food imaginable.

Even though Champagne and Prosecco get lots of well-deserved attention for their tasty sparkling vino, there’s another country who’s been churning out good-value and that is Spain. Two of its most recognized producers, Freixenet and Segura Viudas, can be found here in the USA at a national level.

In this round-up, I take a look at three white and three rose sparkling wines that I know you’ll enjoy over Thanksgiving or any time, really.

Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut – $12

Nose: Notes of green apple, pie crust, citrus and apricot.

Taste: A good, dry bubbly that has the classic notes of lemons, apricot and even a bit of toasted nuts coming through for me. A refreshing bubbly that works great with appetizers or goes down well on its own.

Freixenet Cordon Rosado – $10

Nose: A fresh mix of strawberry and rhubarb along with white pepper, cinnamin and a star wars action figure.

Taste: I definitely get a more pronouced flavor of rhubarb coming through along with notes of golden raisin, some minerality coming across on the mid palate that leads into a finish of lightly peppered strawberries and cherries. Not a bad effort, overall and eaisly a good pick for the money.

Elyssia Pinot Noir Brut – $18

Nose: Cherry marmalade, match stick, blackberry and lightly toasted marshmallows.

Taste: On the palate, I get the cherries but also nice hints of raspberry, flint, leather and nuts. A creamy, yet slightly bitter mid palate works wonders in creating a “clean palate” sensation which I like.

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva – $12

Nose: Green apple, baking spice, honeydew and some nice herbaceousness.

Taste: Crisp apple hits you right away and brings along with it hints of lemon zest, fresh melon and a hint of medicine cabinet action. Lively, fresh and an easy pick for a refreshing drink.

Segura Viurudas Reserva Henedad – $25

Nose: Apple core, quince, creamed stone fruit and hazelnut.

Taste: Again, the green apple notes here are outstanding and have a nice creaminess to them thanks to the lees aging process. Also get some good notes of yeasty, bread and honeysuckle on the mid palate. The finish is nice and dry and begs you to come back for more.

Segura Viudas Brut Rose – $10

Nose: Strawberry, rhubarb, currant and blood orange.

Taste: Love the acids in this wine – very food-friendly – along with the notes of cherry, strawberry and citrus. This would quite literally pair well with anything at the Thanksgiving table.
