Summit Lake Round-up

Family-run wineries are truly the backbone of the industry and make some of the best vino to be had – I’m a huge fan of the passion and excellence to the craft of winemaking they bring to the table. I was first introduced to Summit Lake Vineyards in July from one of their friends and since that time have had the opportunity to sample some wines and get to know thier brand a bit better. Summit Lake is a total family-affair for the Brakesman family – even labeling their wines after some of the various family members.

2003 Emily Kestrel Howell Mountain Cab – W.E.P. Rating: 85%

Technical Data:

  • 100% Cabernet, 100% Estate Grown, Produced, and Bottled
  • Oak:100% French, 24 months
  • Alc. 14.3%
  • Price: $45

Nose: Cherries, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, cedar plank and tobacco

Taste: Extremely smooth mouth-feel, complimented by classic cab fruit-profile of cocoa,  pepper, cherries, rhubarb and a nice cranberry-sauce play on the back-end. Excellent, long finish that lingers very nicely – this wine would pair very well with a pepper-crusted steak or grilled hamburger topped with fire-roasted bell peppers. At $45, however, it’s a bit of a stretch as I’ve had plenty of cabs for under $30 that would compare just as easily.

2006 Summit Lake Vineyards Zinfandel – W.E.P. Rating: 90%

Technical Data:

  • 100% Zinfandel, 100% Estate Grown Produced and Bottled.
  • Oak: 95% American, 5% French for 24 months
  • Alc. 15.6%
  • Price: $24

Nose: Tar, tobacco, blackberry and raspberry jam along with a spicey fruit-cake. Dried apricots, white pepper and black currants.

Taste: A healthy dose of peppered beef jerky combined with an insane amount of blackberry which fold into an almost big-league-chew-like mid-palatte transition. I also get some nice notes of leather, shoe-polish and eucalyptus on the back-end. A solid finish of almost pure jamminess make this wine a no-brainer for any hearty, grilled meat dish.

2002 Zinfandel Port – W.E.P. Rating: 90%

Technical Data:

  • 100% Zinfandel, 100% Estate Grown, Produced and Bottled
  • Oak:  Neutral, 24 months
  • Price: $45
Nose: Cigar tobacco, plum skins, cinnamon, nutmeg, ceyenne pepper and dark chocolate.

Taste: Cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, black plums, figs, blackberries, raspberries and vanilla. Extremely smooth mouthfeel on this wine – as any good port should be – finishes extremely well and isn’t too over the top for me with the sugar action. This is a wine that’d pair extremely well with dark chocolate deserts or toasted figs wrapped in prosciutto.
